If you read the sent email thoroughly you’ll spot their errors and threats to disconnect your electricity. Sometimes you just have to follow your gut instinct.

Text message received from company purporting to be Origin. Multiple red flags in the text: 🚩Grammar/wording was off, so my suspicions were immediately raised. 🚩The stated outstanding balance was incorrect, however – and most worryingly – the account number in the text was accurate. A link to arrange payment was also included. The contact number provided was this one, however I can’t easily verify that this number is referenced on any official Origin Energy website. Another 🚩. ⚠️⚠️⚠️BEWARE⚠️⚠️⚠️ I’ll be confirming with Origin Energy whether this is legitimate communication, otherwise promptly reporting to Scamwatch.

UPDATE: False alarm. 😅 Origin Energy have confirmed the text I received is legitimate and the 1300 number is indeed theirs (it appears on the Origin Energy site under My Account > Contact Us). A relief that scammers don’t have any of my Origin details in their possession. Nonetheless, Origin need to improve the wording of their billing reminders sent via text. Also, I believe providers generally need to stop including active links in texts to customers.

recieved an email with a bill to pay and it had this number to call for any questions checked here because my name was spelt wrong.

Received a very realistic looking letter from Origin on what looks like their letter head. details appear correct, its telling me they have set up my account with them and giving me an account number. Has come through the post to my address. Guess next step will be to send me a bill. However I have had no dealings with origin at all so its a scam. Please BEWARE the letters come in an envelope that has Origin logo too. Its the most realistic scam I have seen. I reckon the scammer is reading these comments and fixing up the things said above that alert people that its a scam. I wonder what it is like to look in the mirror and know that you are a criminal. Is it something one is proud of? I would hate myself if I couldnt look at myself and my belongings and know that I worked honestly for many years to get where I am.

Received a text from this number saying to pay a bill. I rang origin. It’s a fake text. I didn’t click on the link thankfully.

Caller: EmailA real email. I live in Queensland. Email had my correct Origin Energy Account Number and address but different Meter Identifier Number. Email stated that Origin had received a request from my account to move the meter and reseal device. They would be in touch soon, it also stated. There were two links. One said, 'review different types of fees'; the other said, 'meter works administration fee'. I rang Origin. The request came from the electrician whose company had installed ducted air conditioning in my 4-bedroom home on 17 June. In Queensland, apparently, electricians are required to submit a report after they have completed any major electrical work. My a/c had required a new circuit. The electrician's office boss explained that she does the reports and only has choices in the job type category from a drop down box. The electrician only wanted 'reseal the device' but it came coupled with 'move the meter'. My understanding is that major work requires an inspection and signoff. The sign-off is a tag fitted in the meter to state it's been inspected and it's fine. Could 'reseal the device' simply be 'close the meter box'? I told my electrician's office boss to give customers a heads-up so they will expect that email from Origin. The 1300 832 854 number is Origin's old number. Miscommunication all around.

Caller: OriginGot an email to call this number but thought I would check here first, half say scam and half say legit? I checked my bills and it is the correct number for Origin so I will be calling. It's a sad world where we need to check a bloody phone number before we call for fear of being scammed.
